Crozes Hermitage 2009

February 23, 2012

A day of walking around Manhattan and visiting museum, led us downtown for a good lunch at our favorite Pakastanicombier-crozes-map restaurant, which is more like a cafeteria, the Pakistani House.  Eating too much as usual, we thought prehaps a drink could help us wash down all the food.  We opted for a bottle at a wine bar in Tribeca.  Asking the manager his preference of wine for a midday ‘snack,’ he produces a bottle of Crozes Hermitage.  This wine from the Rhone Valley should have been a good choice but unfortunately we were all a bit dissapointed.  The typically unaged and light bodied wine was just that, which would be fine if the aromas of fruit presented themselves.  The dark purple drink gave off a viney or grape juice smell, that overpowered all other smells.  The hidden fruits of blakcberry and mature strawberry were balanced, and the tannins were light, from skins and seeds not wood barrels.  The taste was light and disappeared after a second.  It was lightly salty, metallic, prugne tastinges and viney.  Probably better served slightly chilled so the fruits can come through while drinking.
